Do you find it's more likely to be poorer people or richer people with this mentality? Or someone who has been burned repeatedly by bank charges?

I find it is usually older people who lived during the depression and remember when the banks failed...still not a good idea especially when you can easily get robbed.

Maybe because they're afraid that if there ever was a crisis, everyone would be pulling their money out of the bank, and there wouldn't be any left for them. Also when you deposit money in the bank, it doesn't just sit there, it gets spread out to other people who bank there, so while the records say you have a certain amount, there's only a fraction of that really in there at the time -- which is why there is a limit to how much you can withdraw. I guess some people need the guarantee that once they get money it will always be theirs until they use it.

because no one is going to look after your money as well as you if it wasnt in a bank. the banks just make more money by using your money (interest) when you actually want your money you cant always get it, the machine might be out of order or they have to fill it up with more money etc etc, i would prefer not to use a bank but nowadays you have too as soon as you get a job they will pay straight in to bank bills are discounted if you pay by direct debit, at the end of the day banks make loads of money from OUR HARD EARNED CASH and do they give us any (hardly)

I put my money in the bank that I need to pay bills with. I have found that if I put my savings in the bank, it is too easy to transfer it to my checking and I spend it. Instead I have a safe in my house that I keep the large bills in. Since they are large I can't just easily use them, and I can't use them online- where I end up spending tons of money.

I have a savings account. I trust the banks ( I used to work at one, and my mom still does) I just don't trust me. I tend to spend money less if I can see it. That idea of paying for things in cash is true - it's much harder to spend when you have to hand it over rather than just sign your name or click a button on the computer. =)

Because the banks charge outrageous fees just to "hold" your money.

I think its best to keep at least some in a safe at home... a bank 'crash' could be quite monetarily 'depressing'
