why are hondas such reliable cars?

This is the first car Ive ever had where Ive had absolutely no problem with it, all my other cars were american made (I hate FORD!).

When speaking about reliability in a car, mostly people will refer to its engine, and engine is where Honda excel at. Honda basically held dear the old saying "if it ain't broke don't change it". So basically, they have a few engine, and refine it through all the years. One notable engines that have held its ground for more than a decade is the D series. Starting from 1988 as a simple inline 4 engine with a capacity of 1500cc to an advanced variable intake 1700cc engine as of now, the D series engine evolved incrementally. I do not know for sure what changes had been applied to the D series through all the years, but in 1996 Honda Civic Asia receives a 1700cc engine (before 1600cc), which adds only torque. WIth its application in almost every medium sized car Honda sells (Civic sedan/hatch, Stream, Edix, HR-V, etc), the refinement level will certainly be high.

The same goes with the J series engine, which is a SOHC V6 engine first featured on the Accord back in 1998. Back then, the power output was just a measely 200hp, but today, it has been modified with larger capacity thus producing more power and had been applied to a wide range of Honda and Acura cars. Honda Accord, Honda Odyssey, Honda Ridgeline, Honda Pilot, Acura MDX, Acura TL, Acura RL, Acura CL, and one domestic American brand SUV (sorry, forgot the name) all uses the J series engine with different capacity, and different power output ranging from (as of now) 240 hp to 300 hp. The only different J series engine used today is the one featured on the USDM Odyssey most expensive trim where it adds VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) which can deactivates three cylinders in cruising mode, aside from that, it's the same engine with all other J series (with different power output).

So from engine perspective, I think the use of one engine through all the years will warrant a refinement down the line. Thus, creating better if not durable engine.

I don't think that Honda's are much more reliable than any other cars. I think they have a myth status.

First, Hondas are more expensive, so people with more money buy them and take better care of them. Anyone with a hearbeat can buy a new Ford with 0 down, but they thrash them and don't do regular maintenance.

Second, someone who has spent as much on an import compact car as a domestic midsized car isn't going to want anyone to know that they got a lemon. Look at the Honda section on Y! Answers, there are many problems with Hondas just like any other car.

Now, I do think Honda is better than Ford, but the difference is not as large as people think. I've seen many 20+ year old Fords that are in good running condition and many 10 year old Hondas rusted out and ready for the scrap heap.

But you can still get $5000 for a run out Honda and you won't get $500 for an old Ford in good running condition.

I like honda. I just bought a 92 honda civic and it has 139 k mi on it and it still runs great. The only reason the car runs great is because it was own buy a old guy around his 40's. He wasnt into racing or nothing so it was still in good condition. Ford, i never drove one.

bc of hondas r&d team, honda has actually spent money to make money, they have paid people massive ammounts of money to actually come up with good sound ways to make a vehicle to actually last more than 5 years, any japanese car is going to be better than an american car(subaru, honda, toyota) honda has just got more recognition because they have done more with their cars, having a 1.6 liter engine that made 165 hp was phenomical at the time, and they contnue to progress with the new si which is a 2.0 liter makine 197 hp, ford cant even do that with a 3.8 liter motor.

It's a reality that most American cars are less realible. But it really depends on the driver too. But imported cars come with better warranty.

I don't know I had a Delsol and accord I was burning out in the car and running it hard and the only thing we blowed was the tires

I really don't know, but my next car will be a Honda.
