lynched by muslims in his constituency (I should know he's my MP) He had to call off several meetings for public safety. Muslims can be capable of extreme violence over relatively trivial issues as we saw in the 2001 summer riots and what the hell did we do to deserve 7/7 and the liquid bomb plot. Is this racist or a relevant point?.

People!!!!!!!!!

All this bollocks about muslims and none muslims is really starting to sound like play school material.

theres good and bad in all races/religions and in all races/religions you'll get people that will stir up the **** and try and cause some resentment SO what all us sensable people need to do is just chill the **** out...at the end of the day its thier choice if they want to wear the veil, it might well cut them off from the community but its has to be THEIR choice, so PLEASE just lets try and consider that people have that right to chose, and the consequences of them wearing the veil or not wearing the veil may influence there future decision or view point on the subject.

This is blatant racism!

Jack Straw is bullying Muslims...I dont know if you've noticed but there are a lot of religions in the world & everyone seems to only insult & harrass Muslims.

All Muslims are not capable of extreme violence - the violent muslims are a rareity & if you knew any muslims you'd know that,.

The "Riots" of 2001 were greatly exaggerated & were mainly the cause of ignorant white english people being racist & insulting and assulting people from ethnic minorities (It wasnt just muslims who faught back).

Muslims also do not throw a wobbly over "relatively trivial issues" - imagine if the recently resurrected images had been of jesus instead of mohammed - the christian community would have gone mental!

Perhaps as you claim to live in an area where there are a lot of muslims you may want to learn something by actually talking to them, unless its beneath you due to your blatantly racist beliefs.

The strange thing about this whole issue is it seemed there were more Muslims than "non Muslims" who seemed to agree with Jack Straw.

However I don't blame Jack Straw for cancelling these meetings. There have been so many extremists who are just out to plan revenge and terrorise people who even mention anything negative about there religion in recent years. Look at the Pope! They were burning effigies of him and killing nuns! I would hide too!

Muslims hold the idea of the veil, rather called a hijab, to be very personal. In Islam only the man a woman to is allowed to show her hair to is her husband. Not even male cousins. Some choose not to and that's okay.

But in all honesty this can be considered a very beautiful thing, only letting the one you love see your true self. It's all about modesty and I don't think every one would appreciate it if we were asked to dress in skimpy attire would we. Anyone who has their personal belief challenge can become violent. Ever hear of the Crusades?

it is not racist coz it has nothing to do with a race!!
and whats wrong with identifying deferences between races??
u are making differences between religions. muslims come form different races!

is the veil a cultural thing or religious ?? i dont know how the courts have said its not religious. culture and religion are so closely interwined they cant be distinguished from one another

Straw's point was that not being able to see someone's face makes it harder to relate to them, and thus veils have a negative impact on communication between cultures.

He was not being racist or discriminating, his point was an extremely valid one regarding basic human psychology.

It's like how wearing dark glasses that obscure your eyes can be unnerving or threatening to people - we need to observe facial expression etc to subconciously gauge someone's mood, honesty etc.

Although Im not sure your point is completly racist I have been noticing a great amount of racism towards them on this site in general. The point at the very least is generalizing a large population by its most extreme members. Sort of like comparing all christians with the anti abortion people who blow up the clinics.
