would they rather disrespect it and let it get soiled and torn rather than burnt. or is it the fact that the person burning it may not be as patriotic as they are?

It is only considered wrong when people burn the US Flag out of Hatred against what The United States Stands for.

However in order to burn a flag in order to retire it, you must give it or send it to any US Military Establishment. That is a law that was implemented by our US Congress.

So if you or anyone you know wishes to retire a US Flag, then contact the nearest Military Base or Establiment near you, check in your phone book under Government for Army, Marines, Navy, or Air Force.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Dirty...soiled...damaged flags are destroyed by burning, this is not considered disrespect if done properly ie proper military ceremony. This is usually done by a color guard in the service.....Civilian flags should be turned over to a Veteran group to take care of.

The disrespect enters when people wantonly burn...destroy or wear as clothing all or parts of the flag

They do not Consider the burning ceremony wrong, They are upset when someone just burns the flag to make a point. I am one of those people who would be very upset if you burned the flag to make a statement. I was arrested for doing just that at a Anti-war protest. I enjoyed my 3hours in jail & my $100 fine for disorderly conduct & I would do it again.I fought in 2 wars for that flag & I have a bullet in my right ankel to prove it.

Its the INTENT of the flag burning. If you took the time to actually read the fine print, it says the flag is to be burnt in a respectfull way.

Torching the flag as a symbol of protest is NOT respectful.

Wrong is what other people do and there ought to be a law against everything any other person does unless I do it too.
