I know it's mean to refer to Puerto Ricans but why not use Puertoriqueno? What is the difference between the two words?

It has to do with Puerto Rican culture before the country was actually called Puerto Rican...Boricuans were native to Puerto Rico before the Spaniards discovered it....

It means that you are from Puerto Rico. It comes from Boriken, the name that Taino Indians gave to the Island, meaning "the land of the brave chief". Boriken was interpreted by Spaniards as Borinquen, and its the name used in our anthem to name our country. From Borinquen came Borinqueño, and then a short version of it: boricua, to name all of us who were born in the "the land of the brave chief".

We use puertorriqueño too. But boricua refers to our original roots...before spaniards came and took the land from its original owners. Its an homage to them, to the memory of those who welcomed europeans and in return were killed and submitted to slavery.

Five centuries after...we are still the proud inhabitants of Borikén.

It's the pre-Colombian name for Puerto Rico, given by the Taíno natives.
