an Mp3 player plays music files such as WMA and MP3 files. and mp4 plays recorded videos.
There is a difference between the two. Basically, Mp3 is one specific type of audio format and Mp4 is a container format. However, as mentioned earlier an Mp4 player can play Mp3 files which as much clarity as the original players.

The only difference i know of is that an mp3 song is not as compressed in size as an mp4 song. Which means that a mp4 player can play mp3's but a mp3 player can't play mp4's. hoped i didn't confuse you.
