The European Salmon, as distinct from the Sockeye, is born in European rivers during the winter and stay there as parr for about three to four years. They then make their way to the sea and stay there for about two to three years putting on weight for the next phase of their life cycle. They then return to the river of their birth where they reproduce. When they are 'spent' (having given birth to thousands of eggs, they try to return to the sea. Many do, but most do not. So, their total life span is about 7 years................
