Crunches are the way to go, but you MUST do them properly. If you are doing them right, they are hard - if you can do more than 10 or 12, you are not doing them properly!
Lie on your back with your knees bent up, hands on your stomach. Rock your pelvis (i.e. alternate between sticking your butt out and tucking your butt under) until you find the exact mid-point - you should have a gap under your lower back, but only a tiny one.
Now contract your stomach to lift your head and shoulders off the ground BUT - here's the important bit - you mustn't let your pelvis move, and you mustn't let your tummy bulge. It has to go IN when you lift, not out. That's why you need your hands on your stomach, so you can feel if it goes the wrong way.
If you do crunches and allow your stomach to go out even a bit, the muscles will become strong but will become strong in that slightly outward position, so you'll have trouble getting a really flat stomach.
Once you're sure you have the technique right, you can increase the difficulty by putting your hands behind your head. Then you can also do diagonal ones (where you point your elbow to the opposite knee) etc.

The most productive ab exercises I have come across are from the dvd 10 Minute Solution: Kickbox Bootcamp featuring Keli Roberts. She has a 10 minute ab section (you can play the ab section by itself and not watch all the other sections) where she combines sit ups, pilates, and all kinds of moves that work the abs like nobody's business, it's great stuff. I am very satisfied with the results and cannot recommend this workout enough.
As for food, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Beware of foods and seasonings that may make you bloat, such as too much salt or lots of soda, stuff like that.

My husband is doing backbends to help his back, but (great news) his stomach is flattening out. He stands with his back touching the desk, holds on to the desk, sticks his stomach in, and then leans back. He does sets of 20 several times a day. His spine is straighter, his upper body is more uplifted, and his stomach is flatter. His results were so good, I started doing them too.

Okay, I'll try not to give a stupid answer to a question dangerously close to if not stupid, then dumb. Either simple excercise to strengthen your stomach muscles or a corset made of stone. Hang out with friends that pretend to be listening to you and can sleep with their eyes open. Excercise. Finis'.

Crunches do the job really well. Are you looking for a flat stomach or one with definition? If you do enough crunches and keep your weight down, you will develop "six pack" abs.

consume much less ingredients with sodium, by way of fact sodium holds in water (or something like that) and makes you look bloated. carbs (something like white bread, white pasta, etc) take longer to digest, so which you will look bloated from that too. as for excercises, take a seat ups, crunches, something that works the tummy section. dance (hop hop, abdomen dance) is a strong ingredient for that... and an entire physique exercising habitual.
