It depends on where you live, and what you're looking for in a cellphone. I live in the UK and use Orange, but would be quick to recommend T-Mobile as well.
However, it makes no difference where you are. You need to choose a phone company that:
(a) fits your price plan
(b) has good coverage in your area.
If you live in an area where one network is more reliable than another, you should choose that one, assuming the price tariff fits. If you like sending SMS texts a lot you should choose a tariff that has X amount of free texts, etc. It all depends, and no one really can answer your question without knowing what you like to use a phone for (how many minutes you would be likely to use a month, and at what time of the day; how many texts you like sending a month; do you like surfing websites on your phone, etc.)
You may like using videophone and see the people you are talking to (assuming they also use videophone) - again, this will change the company you choose.
Finally, if most of your friends are on a certain network, you may find it cheaper to choose the same network, because normally it is cheaper to call other people from the same network (at least, it is in the UK - not sure about other countries).
