i don't know whether or not using this service breaks the youtube terms and conditions, but it has been around for a while and works very well.

you just enter the web address of the youtube video and it lets you save the file. but you need to have special software to view this '.flv' file. for instance this works in microsoft windows: http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/article/flv-player-updated

There are websites which do this (you enter the url of the video you want, and they produce a regular file you can save), but youtube changes their videos every week to prevent those sites from working...
