In the fictional Star Wars universe, The Force is a binding, metaphysical and ubiquitous power that is the object of the Jedi and Sith monastic orders.
The Force is described by Obi-Wan Kenobi or Ben as "an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together." The Force is life, and life is the Force. Some think of the Force as a sentient entity that may be capable of intelligent thought—almost as if it were a sort of god—while others simply consider it something that can be manipulated and used as though it were a tool.
The Force appears to be connected to, or responsible for, the destinies of living beings. As Chancellor Palpatine (Darth Sidious) says in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, some Sith masters were able to use the Force to manipulate life and death.
Because it "binds the galaxy together" it reveals characteristics attributed to Dark Matter whose composition is still unknown. Therefore, some believe that indeed some kind of force exists, unless astrophysics comes up with a credible explanation in regard to the nature of Dark Matter.

the force is created by all living things it surronds us and binds us. all living things have mediclorians (excuse my spelling) living in them these cells are what "breaths" the force. the more you have the more force sensative you are. there is one exception. a type of salamander called a Yalsamarri (read the thrawn trilogy) not only does not emit the force but blocks it. if a jedi is within a couple feet of one he has no powers. also there are the Vong wich is a species from a different galaxy (read the new jedi order) that don't block the force but don't contain it either.

the force was the jedi's hidden powers which although invisible, helped to make them invincible for the most part. some though the force was God which is good and the Empire which was evil. Like the Dems vs. the Reps here.
