I work in dry cleaning. Washing in water is harder on wool than dry cleaning because of the way that the individual fibers absorb it during the cleaning process. Dry cleaning solvents are not absorbed in the same way. While I admit that I frequently wash some of my own "dry clean only" garments, I would not do it with anything made of wool. In the long run, even washable wool is better off being dry cleaned.

i usually go with what's on the label inside the garment to be safe
