It means Hallowed Saints Day Eve, in old Latin. Nov. 1st in Saints Day, and so the day before it would be its eve. The demons all come out before Saints Day arrives, and this is where the holiday comes from

Sowen was a Druid Holiday that celebrated the autumn equinox. when catholicism became the dominant religion in EUROPE, they tried to purge the continent of all the old Druid ways but the population refused to give up sowen so the church countered by, starting a new christian based holiday on the same date. they called it all hallows eve. it was later changed to all saints day. it became Halloween, when European immigrants came to AMERICA.

Before Christianity came to the Celtic lands of what is now Germany, Spain, France, and the British Isles, it was a pagan holiday called Samhain. No human sacrifice, just a sort of holiday where the spirits of the dead walked around. People would dress up so the spirits couldn't tell the difference between the living and the dead.
When Christianity came along it was outlawed, but people still celebrated.
