I'm from the U.S. and will be going to lovely Italy for a year. I'm very excited because Italy is a wonderful place, but sometimes I feel guilty for wanting to leave my home country even if it is only for a year. I especially feel this way when watching movies like the Patriot or something else of the sort. Is this a normal thing to feel?

I've been to quite a few other countries before, including Italy..that is why I chose Italy because I loved it so much. I think my guilt sort of comes from the fact that I was raised in the south and people tend to be VERY patriotic which is not a bad thing, but allot of times when they find out where I'm giong they just ask me why I would want to leave here.

Yes, it is normal. You will always feel that way, when visiting another country. You love this country, and always feel safe here, that could help answer your question. It is just the feeling that most people have, who leave the States. Don't feel guilty, enjoy your trip, while you are still able too. When you come back home, you will be overwhelmed with the feelings that you have for this country. You will be happy that you took the trip, and will feel much better, when you put your feet back on US soil. Have a Great Time..

It is a feeling that never, ever goes away. You are only going for a year - that is just a moment in life's journey. I left my country forty years ago and the feeling never leaves. It was strange, but up to the time my mother died, I always called Ireland my home, however, literally within weeks of her death, I was calling London my home - which in fact it is....... Incidentally, you will love Italy. Try at weekends to get out of the cities and into the mountains. The people are fantastic, welcoming and very happy-go-lucky - beautiful people, beautiful weather, beautiful food - a lovely place to be................ Enjoy your year........

oh dear, you have been very well indoctrinated havent you. hopefully a trip to europe will open your eyes, here we dont need guns to defend ourselves from the man across the street,
Although its completely unfair on you, you´ll probably discover how much the rest of the world hates america. American people are just people like anywhere else, but the state of america is the most hated state on the planet, an emotion well deserved. Americans have been subject to state propaganda for generations so reasonable people from elsewhere will have sympathy for your lack of understanding of the real world, unfortunately the less reasonable will just be disgusted by you.....but at least we wont shoot you.

Why should you feel guilty about wanting to see other places? It has nothing to do with lack of love for your own country, it just means that you appreciate that the rest of the world has a lot to offer too.
Are you sure there's not more to it, like a boyfriend, or family, that's making you feel bad?

Normal? Well what is normal. I think it is that you are a loyal person to your homeland. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy other lands too. It is a great opportunity. Live life with no regrets. Make a decision and do what you do because you feel it is a good choice. Guilt feelings serve no beneficial purpose, it is negative. Do what you feel is best. Congrats. Sounds great. I hope you have a great year. Best or health & happiness & adventure.

yes it is
just like going to live at college..but it is just for a short time..it is not like you are defecting or something..
and it is a wonderful experience you will have..
they are wonderful people, and they have fantastic food and culture..make the most out of it...get a digital camera with a few extra memory sticks and a lap top computer to down load them to..then save them to an external memory..and even email them home...and...but take tons and tons of pictures..do not forget to get the electrical adapters to run your USA products over there....this is something you may never do again...
do not feel bad..it is normal to feel this way..and you WILL be back before you know it..
good luck
have fun
stay safe
smile

No, it's not normal, seriously. It sounds like you have been the victim of some serious nationalistic brainwashing. Get out and see the world. Our country is but a speck in the global community.

Why feel guilty - you will always be American - you don't have to live there!! Travel is a wonderful thing - get out there and enjoy it.
I am proud to be Welsh but I haven't actually lived there for 20 years!!

Heck YEAH! Everyone feels like that. if you left your school( if ur in school) and moved to another, youd feel guilty about leaving your home team and rooting for another one at football games. just think about the wonderful Italian streets and accents and how romantic and fun it will be.

Are you renouncing your citizenship or just going on an extended vacation or schooling abroad? There is a big difference and the KEY will be how American you act while you are there. Make us proud!
