How painful are they?

It can depend on your breast size. If you have small breasts, they have to pull on them a bit to "get them into the machine", which can be painful, according to my mother who's an A cup. If your breasts are a bit larger, I'm a D cup, it usually isn't painful, just uncomfortable.

it depends on your pain tolerance. I am also a D cup and I can tell you that it does not hurt me at all. It's a lot of squeezing though, so I can understand why some women think it hurts. It's not going to be any kind of unbearable pain though so don't worry. Just squeeze your own breast really hard and that will tell you about how much pain is involved.

I've had 5 so far. Out of 5, 1 was "uncomfortable", but I wouldn't say it hurt. It may depend on your size, and I think it has a lot to do with the technician giving it. Also, try not to schedule it near "that time of month" if you tend to have tender breasts.

According to several articles I've read, a mammogram should NOT hurt at all. Yes, it is uncomfortable; but if it causes you pain, you need to tell them to STOP!

I've never had one - I refuse to - I told my doctor that when he starts getting his testicles flattened and irradiated every year, maybe I'll think about it.

They are not painful at all. The equipment and techniques used have been dramatically improved over the past few years.

I have them every 6 months. If your breasts are firm it will be a bit more uncomfortable for you but it should never hurt! They only flatten them to a level that is still of comfort to you. They even ask if this is uncomfortable? Please make sure you have it done...

My wife said that "it depends upon the size of your breasts. She's a 36D and said that it hurts but is in no way unbearable. The alternative of breast cancer is certainly not an option. It's over quickly and is worth every minute of it." (her words)
