On Mythbusters, they tested each ingredient of the diet coke to see if they had a contributing effect on the reaction. They found that almost all ingredients contributed to it - thus diet coke's combination of ingredients worked the "best" but other sodas would work also. They also determined that the coating of the Mentos - which has very small dimples (think golf ball) which allows the CO2 little areas to "settle into" and once the threshold is hit, forces the CO2 out of the bottle violently.

dont relly know but it is some chemical reaction mythbusters did a thing on it pretty cool though try eating them then drink the coke.
