Let the number of weeks be x
since he already has 6 tomatoes, the number of tomatoes he now needs is 30-6 = 24
in one week he can get 8 tomatoes
so in x weeks he would get 8 * x tomatoes
this should be equal to the number he needs
so the equation would be
8x=24
x= 24/8 = 3
therefore he needs 3 weeks to produce 24 tomatoes, he already has 6, so it would 30 tomatoes in the end.

If he already has 6 tomatoes, he needs 24 more. Since his plants produce 8 tomatoes per week, he'll need 3 weeks.

As far as an equation goes, if x is the number of weeks, 8x is how many tomatoes will be produced in those weeks.

8x = 24
x = 3

he produces 8/wk = 8x
he has 6 already so 8x+6 = 30 8x=30-6=24
8x/8=24/8 x=3
