You should definatly be more aware and cautious, but she might be a little extreme. I wouldn't worry. Congrats on the baby!

I would say NO, Dont be worried! I know there is a lot of killings going on in the world, what with all those school shootings etc, I said the same thing to myself a couple a weeks ago (Boy theres a lot of murders etc going on) but you have to remember the news reporters have to dramatize something, if anything to get a good story. I have been reading a history book and it happened way back in the 19th century, something called "yellow jounalism" thats where newspapers dramtized the news to get good circulation...
The way I look at it, is you have more chance of being run over by a bus, than ever getting caught up in murder, its like saying your never gonna fly again coz youve seen too many plane crashes, but heck how are you gonna go see your grandmother in that far away state if you DONT fly, so there you go I hope I helped a bit...

Being a mother, she's naturally going to be concerned about the well-being of her child, born or not. I amend her 4 takin' such precautionary steps.
In other words, no u should not worry, and she is not paranoid. She's cautious. There used to be a time that women couldn't trust men, but now, pregnant women can't trust other women either.
As far as the home-schooling goes, I don't think that's a good idea because the child will not be able to develop his/her social skills. However, if the child is only a 5-month-old fetus, then there's still a lot of time b4 u have to face such a decision. Anything can happen between now and then.

well, not answering the door is a bit over the edge, but who can blame her, and as for homeschooling, yeah to a soon to be mom seeing all the school violence, its pretty understandable that she would feel that way. Heck when i was pregnant, i felt the same way.. now that our child is 15 months and im pregnant with number 2... im not so worried about the whole homeschooling thing, maybe a nice private school, but still, jsut be supportive of her, shes fearful, when you see all thats going on in the world, sometimes you wonder, how can i bring achild into this insanity, and how can I be a good parent and protect her.?
the fears will pass and some will remain, its normal, called mommy instincts

I dont answer the door either if I dont know the person. I know how many crazies are out there. She may be a little paranoid, but that is fine. If she feels strongly about homeschooling then that is good too. If anything makes her feel safer, then let her do it. I do have thoughts in the back of my mind too about schools, etc. I have a 9, 7 and 2 year old and one on the way. And yes these things concern me. But I dont obsess about it. She is going to worry about it regardless of waht anyone says though.

It's always good to be cautious. There are many ways criminals, be it con-artists, rapists, robbers, and killers do to con their way into their home. Some are organized where they scout out the area first, watching the pattern of the people in the neighborhood. Who comes, who goes, when it's the quitest, etc, and they specifcally target those they know they can control easily, such as the elderly, women (especially pregnant ones), as they tend to be less combative than young men. Keeping the door locked, answering it only if she knows who it is, or keeping the phone on her in case someone tries to break in is smart, not paranoid.
As far as the home schooling, there are benefits I'm sure, but keep in mind not every school will be like Columbine, etc. Research the school policies and safety steps they take for their students.

First of all, your wife is going through tremendous hormone changes nearly minute by minute due to being pregnant. Be understanding, listen to her concerns like I am sure you are doing, and try to come up wit some solutions that might give her some piece of mind.
Unfortunately, we do seem to live in a crazy world these days and people are doing desperately crazy things to get what they want with no thought to the consequences.
I would suggest using some safety know how like keep the doors locked at home and in the car especially when she is home alone. Go out with her if she needs to go out in the evening or at least walk her to her car if it is parked on the street. Tell her to be aware of her surroundings including people that are around her when she is out and about.
Home schooling has its good and bad points. It is not the end all be all to all of life's issues. We have not home schooled but know people that have and by middle school they started to bring their children to some classes plus there is the issue of alloing them to join activities to socialize with other kids and you can't be a nervous wreck for ever.
Be safe and best of luck with your baby. You will need the luck and enjoy every single minute of it because time flies by soooo fast with kids.
Mother of 15 y.o boy who still worries too. :)

That's not being paranoid, that's being smart. Why would you leave your door unlocked in the first place??? That's crazy. People are killed all the time by people pretending to be delivery people or weird things like that. Better to be safe than sorry, and I really think you should support your wife in her smart decision making. No one should keep their doors unlocked anymore, no matter where you live, it's just not safe anymore.

if you think about the actual ratio of pregnant mothers being killed or children being killed or kidnapped, the chances that it will happen to you is very, very low. there are 3 million people in the u.s., so your chances are more like 1 in 3 million. the media just likes to blow up stories out of proportion and make it seem like these things happen more often than they really do. people get scared, then, because the media reports so much of the "bad stuff" that happens in the world, but hardly ever reports any "good stuff". i mean, when was the last time you heard a news report like "man volunteers at soup kitchen"?

well i think you should worry, but not to and extreme. i mean it's good to keep the doors locked and it's good to be cautious but not so scared to not answer the door. if she's really worried get an alarm system. also about the homeschooling.. NO! she may want to protect him but home schooling won't help that much. i mean you still go places so it really doesn't matter. be careful just but not so far as getting paranoid.. =]
