By presenting a variety of characters--different personalities, different backgrounds, etc.--it seems very 'real' and 'authentic' as opposed to shallow and fake like some books do. Also, I like the range of emotions. Everything is balanced. It's okay to feel whatever you're feeling and you don't have to pretend.

The book and movie, simply allow a maturing woman, to find similarities and ties into traditional family values, using female family relatives. Though one character doesn't emulate any specific person, collectively those attributes contribute the main character causing internal conflict on the emotional level. This is especially familiar to women, who think, they'll never be like their mothers, and rebel at the characteristics they find so revolting when young, and frustrating. It's a parallel between the growing stages of maturity, and life experiences that allows the story to come to full circle, and the love and appreciation for woman to be the glue that holds the sentimentality together. :o)

Any girl that reads it can identify with one of the characters, at least in a small way. It is a very well written book.
