The mileage isn't as important IMO as how the car was maintained and used. A car that has only been driven to the corner grocery usually won't hold up to a long commute and vice versa. The way a car is used creates wear marks. When you dramatically change how the car is used, you disturb these wear marks.
Of course this is only an old man's (mine) opinion. But it has served me well.

Approx. 12,000 miles a year. But how it was driven is also very important. Freeway miles are usually better because the engine gets hotter and burns away all of the gunk buildup.
