FeO+O2---->Fe2O3

First, you notice that the oxygen atoms are balances while iron isn't. So, you put 2 in front of FeO to balance iron

2FeO + O2 ---> Fe2O3
Now you notice that oxygen isn't balanced, 4 atoms of oxygen on left side versus 3 atoms of oxyden on right side

so you put 2 in front of Fe2O3 and 4 in front of FeO to balance oxygen & iron both

4FeO + O2 ---> 2Fe2O3

Please note that this is a trial & error approach & you will have to practice balancing more eqns in order to get good at this! Good luck!

Make a list of the elements that are on each side of the equation (arrow). Beside those, write the number of those there are.

FeO+O2---->Fe2O3

Fe 1 ---- Fe 2
O 1 + 2 ---- O 3

So you have one more Fe on the right than on the left. The O's are even, but you'll have to change those to add a Fe. So put a coefficient of 2 in front of the FeO on the left to bring your total Fe's up to 2 on both sides, and redo the numbers.

2FeO+O2---->Fe2O3

Fe 2 ---- Fe 2
O 2 + 2 ---- O 3

Notice how the O's changed to, and they don't match up now either. To add O's to the right side, you're also going to have to change the number of Fe's. If you put a 2 in front of the Fe's on the right, it will bring the total to 4 Fe's on the right, but still only two on the left. So, we'll change it to 4 on the left as well. Both steps are included in the new information below:

4FeO+O2---->2Fe2O3

Fe 4 ---- Fe 4
O 4 + 2 ---- O 6

Now, all of your elements match up, and you have a balanced equation!

I hope this helped!
