Assuming that the war is going poorly for the Coalition, might it be a good idea to have the Iraqi people directly vote for whether or not we should stay? If they vote "leave!" then we have a justification for leaving. If they say stay then it would help diffuse the arguments and propaganda of our detractors.

Good or bad idea? Why?

That may be a very good idea, we just have to make certain that the vote is actual and not rigged like the election of their President.

It's a great idea, but the current administration will never go for it because they think they know what is best for the Iraqis.

Bad idea. It's like the US telling Iraq that they need to have three states, one for each faction...

It's their democracy. They decide what and when they vote.
