Gringo (feminine, gringa) is a term in the Spanish and Portuguese languages used in some countries of Latin America to refer to native English speakers (from the United States in particular, but also from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and elsewhere as well) as well as other non-English speakers of European heritage. The American Heritage Dictionary classifies the term as offensive slang , though many who use it do not do so pejoratively.
In informal Spanish speech, "gringo" offers a convenient shorthand, to refer to a person from the U.S., since the term "American" is used to refer to anyone from the entire American continent (North, Central and South).
The term does lend itself to derogatory, paternalistic or endearing connotations sometimes, depending on the context and the intent of the user.
In some regions of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and nearby areas, "Gringo" is used to refer to any European immigrant but not from Spain or Portugal. It is not a pejorative term. It is also used (jokingly) as a nickname for people who are dark skinned. Another word for gringo in this part of the world is Polaco (Polish), ruso (Jewish) and turco (Arab).

Read about etymologies near the bottom of the page.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gringos
this is one I heard a long time ago:
legend maintains that one of two songs – either "Green Grow the Lilacs" or "Green Grow the Rushes, O" – was popular at the time and that Mexicans heard the invading U.S. troops singing "Green grow..." and contracted this into gringo.

Racism. They're racist.
There's a thinking in the Latin American community that "white people" think they "know everything" and that they're "better than everyone else".
It's hypocritical actually because claiming that all people within a certain group think a certain way that thinking is in itself prejudice.
I know several Latin Americans who would never use that phrase. Racism is a individual trait that is commonly shared. There are people who are racist but may have different excuses for why they feel that way."Gringo" is Spanish for "white" as i understand it but used often in a negative context.
There is a great deal of racism in Latin American countries. Stemming from a few of the more "European" people in say for instance Mexico over the darker skinned "native peoples". Hate just breeds more hate. "Hate leads to fear and fear leads to anger and anger leads to suffering" as the wise Yoda said.
It's sad but true that it's mentally easier to hate than it is to love. Hate brings a false sense of self righteousness and self justification which in itself is a false notion a kind of delusion of grandeur.
There is no justification for racism or intolerance of any kind. It's an excuse for ignorance and intellectual laziness. Anyone who would justify such thoughts by saying "Well they're just responding to racist remarks made against them." or "They're victims of racism so they have a right to be angry." is just supporting and exacerbating the problem. Never judge the actions of the group by the actions of the individual.
