It is actually a question about psychology. You remember the times that you are the first at the light more than the times that you aren't; mainly because these are more memorable. Therefore, you feel that you are the first more often than not, since you are not really considering all the times, but all the times you can remember.
It is much the same as Texas Hold'em Poker:
People believe that AA, and AK lose more often than win, because they remember losing with them more often than playing with them, but in reality they ARE more likely to win than most other hands.
