Oxygen is a -2 (most all the time, except when it's in a peroxide), magnesium is a +2.

Look at your periodic table. Everything in the vertical column on the left, where H and Li are are a +1, then the next column is +2, then +3. Now go to the far right column where the noble gases are. They are all full of electrons so they have no charge. Then go left one column where Br and Cl are; they are a -1. Then the column with O and S are -2, then the column with N is a -3.

since magnesium belongs to the alkaline-earth metal family on the periodic table, its charge is 2+. Oxygen is in the column of elements with charge of 2- so that's its charge.

The charges would almost always be +2 for Mg and -2 for O, but O could also be -1 in a peroxide or -1/2 in a superoxide.
