Two reasons: the most important being: the price elasticity of demand for alcohol is very low. i.e. the demand of alcohol is not very much affected by an increased price due to tax. This make it ideal for the government to earn lots of money.

Second reason: To deter people from drinking, or to pretend that thats the reason

anything the public loves or enjoys the govt will tax it too much money to be had there sucks.thet sure get alot of my money,cant have nothing.

Because we have this thing about taxing things that everybody likes, but which are supposed to be "bad for us" - except, of course, for gasoline.
