I am moving with my girlfriend to San Diego perhaps...Do you think it's a safe area? I'm moving from Ohio in a year and a half and am trying to plan ahead as much and as well as possible. If anyone has personally moved to Cali from somewhere like Ohio, I would love to talk to them and get some tips and just have someone to talk to (becker103@yahoo.com). Anyone who wants to post some advice, suggestions, etc feel free! Thank you very much.

I don't live there but I know it's expensive. Have fun. Get a good job and you'll be set for life. Live your life with your girl friend.
GOOD LUCK!

The area near the Qualcomm stadium is new and it's sort of in the isolated area of Mission Valley because the development ends near there, although there are major shopping areas within a couple of miles away. It is a safe and nice area. Personally, Mission Valley is mainly good for shopping because there are two big malls within a few miles of each other. The traffic can get backed up because the 8 FWY divides the city and only a handful of big streets connect across the freeway. Also the 8 and the 805 connector can get real busy. It's not that cheap either. For that price, I'd rather live more toward the beach such as Ocean Beach or La Jolla. But then I love the outdoors. From MV, you will probably have to drive 20 minutes to the nearest beach. There aren't too many bad areas near MV but a few of the tougher areas that I can think of are some parts of downtown SD and Logan Heights. But try not to venture too far east or south of MV.

Well, I just moved here. And from what I see, everyone is not rich. Don't get me wrong, there is some money out here. I've wanted to move here for several years and finally did it. My only regret is not having moved out here sooner.

This truly is America's Finest City, no doubt. Yes, the cost of living is high. But what some of the previous posters failed to mention, is that wages are high. It will be a sacrifice for the first few years, but you will not regret it.

I cannot stress how beautiful this city is. Great year round weather, the beaches, the amazing women, and the chill attitude of the residents is incredible.

Just like any big city, it has it's bad areas. However, from my experience, most of the city is okay to live in.

Although I moved from within the state, it was no less an effort. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

The best advice for someone moving from Ohio to San Diego is to prepare yourself for the high cost of living. In regards to living in a safe area, that depends on how much you can afford as well.

Hello! I hope you like it here. I personally love San Diego - gorgeous weather, beautiful beaches, and friendly people. What's not to love? Well, the high cost of housing, like others mentioned. But I think it's worth it to live in such a great place.

Like any other big city, there are more dangerous and less dangerous areas of San Diego that you can live in. Just be sure to check out the particular neighborhood you're considering before signing a lease. Crime rates can vary widely just from neighborhood to neighborhood, so it's also a great idea to drive by and check out your surroundings before making a decision. Here is a link to neighborhood crime rates in SD for last year, for your reference:

If you don't mind braving traffic, you can also live in North County San Diego (Vista, San Marcos, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff by the Sea, Solana Beach, Del Mar). Rents are higher there, on the whole, and traffic is awful during rush hour, but I think North County's a little nicer in general than Central or South San Diego. The best places to live in terms of crime for Central San Diego are probably La Jolla (gorgeous - but really high housing costs), Scripps Ranch, Tierrasanta, and Kensington. I live in Mira Mesa now (Central SD) and don't recommend it, it's kinda ghetto in some areas. For North County, I don't recommend Escondido. It's kind of run down in some areas and has a not great school district.

Other than that, hopefully adapting to the weather won't be difficult since it's warm and beautiful here year-round. Enjoy the beach and the great restaurants. Hope you like it here!

I love San Diego! Like a lot of places, costs are rising, though. I've only visited several times, never lived there.
