Yes, you signed a legal document agreed to guarantee the amount which means if the bank wants the money and the person you guaranteed cannot pay its your responsibility to pay and you can be taken through the judicial system to enforce payment.

Yes they can, once you sign up as the guarantor you give the bank permission to demand statements when they need to, it is for their security to see if you are suitable, or if the person you sponsored is failing to come up with the loan/money.
