See if your local music store rents instruments. If so, ask what brands they carry. Names to look for are Gemeinhart, Selmer, Bundy, and Emerson. There are numerous offshoot of these companies that also make reliable instruments; someone at a good music store can explain what a good brand of flute would be. You don't mention what kinds of flute you're looking for, but most music stores should carry a good student or intermediate flute. You may also try e-bay, but make sure you know exactly what you are buying and that it is a quality instrument.
