I too live in snowy Central NY. I have mums in my garden, and I do nothing. They bloom in the fall, I cut them back in the spring (recommended by Terry Ettinger) and they come back every year. I think leaving the plants until spring, they sort of protect the roots over the winter. So plant them now before it does snow.

It would help if you told what area you live in....

I live in NC, and here you don't have to take up your Chrysanthemums....you just leave them in the ground and they return year after year.

Cut them way back. Plant them in full sun & mulch them well. They should come back next year.
