I asked this a few weeks ago. The motor runs fine for the first mile or so then starts cutting out then will not rev past 1800rpm's (below 1800 rpm's it runs good with know mis). I put it in the shop and had them replace the stator, water pump, and they did some carb work. I'm suspect that they did the stator, the motor is still doing the same thing. I guess I need to know where the stator is located because the flywheel has not been removed. It is driving me nuts. Any ideas would be helpful.

I own a boat repair shop in Ohio and I agree with the other two sugggestions about the pwr pack.... What a pwr pack is a switch box with a low and high side since a outboard runs 90% of its life on the high side (meaning half to full thottle) this high side of the pwr pack faults first. Leaving you the low side this is so you can return to the dock.
Check with Repaired.com they sell remanned boat electronics. You can replace this yourself just REMEMBER to disconnect the battery first!! REPLACE one wire at a time. GOOD LUCK!!

The stator would be under the flywheel, but I think you have a UFI Under Flywheel Ignition. Which if it is, all you would have on the outside of the flywheel is the two coils, no power pack.
You issue could be a coil or power pack. Or motor could be heating up and causing a thermal break down of a component. Have you tried using the fuel primer when it starts to fall of? If so, what was the reaction? If the engine pick up and ran you have a fuel delivery issue, if it bogged down, your fuel system is probably ok. You will need to look at a new power pack or ufi unit. Good luck.

Mercman is right but in what he says but if it runs good for a mile then its not electrical unless its related to an overheat problem or fuel restriction. The electronics on the engine will not allow you to run above a certain rpm when an overheat situation occurs. It will cut back the rpm's to allow you to get home without causing serious damage to the powerhead. If your water discharge is good look to your fuel system.

Stator plate is under the flywheel. Sounds like a cracked or leaking coil.

Sounds like a fuel line or carb problem to me. Replace fuel filer, but empty old gas before doing so. If it's an 87', you may have rusty gas tank clogging the fuel lines Clean carbs and check for fowled spark plugs as well.

fill a Ziploc freezer bag with ice place it on the coils then make a test run if no change pace it on the ign box and retest to see if its a spark problem.if still no change use a fuel tank AND HOSE from a good running engine to compare. you stated your engine run good for a mile so it's NOT a carb or fuel pump problem.

Does the fuel tank vent work?
