Of course you should tell him he's not real, if he's asking! It shows he already has his doubts, so you should confirm them to him. He has to learn sooner enough.
Or else, when he DOES discover that Santa is not real, he'll feel cheated by your subterfuge.

When I was asked this question, my answer was always "All I can tell you is that when you stop believing in Santa, Santa stops leaving gifts." To this day my "kids" still believe... and Santa still leaves a gifts for them - they're ages 23, 21, 18, and 16. ;-)

Just tell him he is for the fun of it if he's a child under 12. If it's a teenager tell him ya Santa's not real. If he's a small child tell him Santa is God's helper so that's y he has to behave himself every year to get presents.

Make up a story about a little boy who believed in Santa until 1 day he saw his Dad wrapping gifts & putting them under the tree.
The little boy was surprised. But his Dad told him the truth about Santa & now the little boy is a Santa helper just like dad.

my 9 yr. old has been asking this for a few years now.i have always told him that if he believes in Santa then he's real, if he doesn't believe then it's not. those of us that grew up with the tradition of Santa know that it's the spirit of Christmas that keeps him alive in our hearts. i don't think children really want to stop believing, they do it cause everyone else says to.eventually though, we all grow up. but wouldn't it be nice to forget all the commercialism, sit back, relax and just believe?

Tell him about the spirit of Santa Claus, explain the story, and ask if he or she would like to be a Santa -- give freely to a charity.

I told my son the truth. I also said that people believe in different things and that it is real to them. Santa adds magic to the season, give the history and tradition of it.

Explain to your kid that in life, there are many things that are not true. You just want to keep your kid happy and have a good time rather than something else like being bored or stressed etc.
