The national flag of the German Kaiserreich from 1871 till 1918 was black-white-red horizontally. Black and white stood for Prussia the biggest state in the country and white and red for the hanseatic cities, the smallest states.
The other flag that some others described with the cross, the black-white-red in the upper left and the round coat of arms with the eagle in the middle is the Reichskriegsflagge or war flag, which was flown by warships for example.
