Violin. I've played it for 10 years. It not only can plucked like a guitar, but also has the ability to be played with a bow. Additionally, it comes in olde fashioned "acoustic" style and the electric variety. It's been used in music ranging from metal to classical, bluegrass and Celtic. I definitely prefer the superiority of the violin.

This sounds a bit pretentious, but I think my favourite instrument of all is the ondes Martenot. It has a purity of tone, but can sound really emotional as well. When it is written for by a great composer, there is nothing to match it, imo.

double bass, no doubt. Without a double bass, bands and orchestras just don't sound complete. And they don't get the credit they deserve. They are the time keepers for music and are often the best players in a musical group through simple hard work.
