It is not just a Muslims' Christmas..in fact it's not even close to that.
It is a festival celebrated by both the Hindus and Jains. It is an Indian fesitval of lights and is usually two days before the Indian New Year. Most families light candles, get together as families, have big dinners, participate in programs-children dances, pray, perform pujas, and just have a good time by taking a break from our busy lives and spending time with friends and famiyl-close ones.
Muslims do not celebrate Diwali...they celebrate their days of fasting by celebrating Eid.
It just so happens that Jains and Hindus BOTH celebrate Diwali and Muslims celebrate Eid around the same time!

Diwali or Deepavali ( Deep means lamp in sanskrit language) is the celebration day when Lord Rama returned to his hometown(Ayodhya) after destroying the demon Ravana. There are other significant events too, but this is the main one. Have you heard of Rama, Krishna..? Indian Gods. Hindus celebrate Diwali by taking an oil bathe early morning, wear new clothes, go to temple. visit friends/relatives with sweets, burst fire-crackers, light oil lamps. In india people of all religions participate in this festival.

Diwali is a festival celebrated in India by the Indians. It is a festival of lights and is celebrated by lighting lamps and fire crackers and distributing sweets.
it is to mark the death of the devil, or rather the victory of God over evil, that is the victory of good over the evil. it is celebrated with much vigour and happiness all over India and by all the Indians all over the world.
if any of u plan to visit India, please visit during the time of diwali or deepavali as it is originally called. deepa means light or lamps, something similar to candles or rather traditionally little mud pots or ceremic pots called diyas are filled with oil and a cotton thread or wick is put in the oil and lighted up, to form a lamp. thousands of such lamps are lit inside and outside each and every house hold and the fire crackers are lighted with much enthusiasm. lots of sweets and home made goodies do their rounds and there is lot of happiness in the air, something similar to Christmas or Thanksgiving day.
even though diwali is originally celebrated by the hindus, people from other religious communities also join in the celebrations and enjoy the firecrackers and sweets. so it is a time of harmony and well wishing. even our Christian and Muslim friends enjoy our celebrations and join in as much as we join in their celebration of Christmas and Ramzan.

Yes..The skeptic person is right abt it. Bursting crackers is a symbol of destruction of the evil. They also light small lamps as a new beginning of life.
The general way to celebrate Diwali is to wear new clothes, share sweets and burst crackers. It is a lot of fun.

Deepawli is a Festival celebrated mainly by Hindus. the reason is the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya from his 14yrs exile. The day happened to be a Amavasya ( Moonless Night). Therefore the people of Ayodhya lighted diyas to welcome him.
