Not at all offensive. It means native or inhabitant of the United States, or of New England, or of the northern states.

Yank - Yankee, southerners use it towards northerners.

Joke: You know the difference between a Yankee and a damn Yankee?

A : The Yankee came to visit and went home, the damn Yankee stayed.

It's a term that's been around since before the Civil war, and will probably never go away. Northerners are Yankees, and we have Rednecks and Rebels.

(by the way, I mean no offense by the joke, just used it as an example)

I don't, it goes back to the civil war, or maybe even before, but the norhterners were called yankees. People today in our southern states call people from the north yanks. I am from Oregon and was living in Georgia for a time and was often refered to as a Yank.

The root of the word `Yankee` may derive from the Dutch `JANKE` = variant of JOHN and used derisively. It may also derive from Native American, `JENGEES` = the English. The Brits use` Yanks` to mean Americans in general.

Well you don't call somebody from the South a yankee or you'll find yourself missing as many teeth as they are. The southerners have called the northerners yankees since the Civil War. People in the western US kind of have no clue. It's mostly the people on the eastern seaboard that know what you're talking about.

People from the South of the United States would find it offensive. "Yanks" were the Northern troops in the Civil War. The South called itself "Rebels."
The term is not generally offensive, but rather out-of-date, to most American ears.

No, not at all. That isn't even used by mainstream culture so if you used it you'd probably for sure be singled out. Which you could justify by being English. I just read another point (think of someting new) and definately its not offensive but its like calling a girl a hussy its really outdated and embarassing. Or someone is the cats meow.

i believe a yank or Yankee is a new yorker, so maybe a west coaster might object to it. Its like calling all Asians Pakis, when that term only refers to Pakistanis and not Indians. By the way, unbeknown to u racists Paki means 'pure'.

I think Yank refers to Yankee the term used by Confederates supporters to describe their opponents.

Speaking as an American, I don't find it offensive. The word is short for"Yankee" when the Brits were over here fighting those rebellious colonials, lol.
