It would most probably be due to the fact that your death involved the Medical Examiner or Coroner and they took too much time in their investigation and examination, so the funeral home was delayed in getting the body. You could have died overseas and the plane bringing you back got delayed or hijacked.

I happend to be a funeral director and let me tell you what I experienced over 25 years ago. I received a phone call from a man saying his father died. He gave me no information and simply asked if I could handle a funeral in two days. I answered that I could and he said he would call me back. I never heard from him, so I figured he called another funeral home. Two days later, a car pulls into my parking lot and two women get out. They said they were coming to attend the "Smith" funeral. I told them we were not handling the funeral and suggested that they take a ride over to my competitor. Within five minutes the same thing happens again. This time the driver says he was at my competior and they said they were not handling the funeral and suggest they come to my funeral home. As we were talking, two more cars pull in and the people tell me they are here to attend the "Smith" funeral. When I told them we were not handling the funeral, they replied they were the family of "Mr. Smith." I told them no one called us to handle the funeral. As it turned out, there were two grown sons. When their father died at the hospital, they were talking on where they wanted the funeral. One son said to the other that he should call me to see if I could handle the funeral. That was the call I got. When I told him yes, he told his brother that I could handle the funeral and they brother said that he wanted to use my funeral home. So, the brother who made the call to me thought his brother was going to call me back and make all the arrangements. The other brother thought since his brother made the first call, he would call me back to set everything up. So, there we are, a family, about 100 friends and relatives, no body and no clergyman. The family was panic stricken and ready to fight each other. I called a local clergyman who was able to come right over. I called a friend of mine who had a funeral home near the hospital. He ran over, got the body and brought it to my funeral home. We had enough time to put the body (unprepared) in a casket, put it in the chapel, and let the clergyman preform a service. We told everyone there that the burial would be the next day due to a problem at the cemetery. After the 'funeral" we completed all the details with the family and prepared the body.

So, there is a case where someone was not only almost late to his own funeral, he almost missed it!

When you are being driven to this occasion where you most likely don't want to be, your drivers might get lost when they see a wild party going on. They could be compelled to stop and do a few dances, maybe tell a few jokes (since it started out to be a sad occasion and needs to be lightened up). And for you, what is one last fling, it might be your last chance. Even if you do have to enjoy it from the hearse.

If you work for an airline there can be only one reason. The weather. And therefore are not responsible for the delay.

I'm late for everything, I don't see why my funeral will be any different. That will happen to my hearse.
