Salt softens the water and makes the dye hold better and set. Making the color more true.

It may help the dye stick to the clothes so it doesn't fade out so soon. Kind of like the neutralizer when you get a perm.

The salt sets the dye. I do hope the dye does not stain your washer though!!

I think the salt, being harsh or rough, helps the die stick to the clothes when moved back and forth...its like beating against a rock..................Just a thought
