I dont know if you are in the USA or Canada, so I can only answer the Canadian part.
I am on the bone marrow registry. Before they will put you on the list here they will send you information on what would happen and sometimes ask you to attend a seminar. That way you are informed and can back out if you want to.
I was not called for bone marrow, but I was called for platellettes. The person I had to give for was in NW Ontario and had cancer. I can honestly say it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

My grandson has donated twice this year to a young mother, with 2 young children. She was in the last stages of Leukemia. So far she has done fine. We do not know who she is and she does not know who he is, but he and our family have been able to send her letters through the donating admistration. After 1 year if all continues to do well, we will get to meet her and her family. You have no idea the wonderful feeling I have about my grandson, who has done this for her.

I haven't been called, but I'm on it. My brother had a transplant from a donor a few years ago. Donating is one of the greatest things you can do for someone. It only takes a day of your life to donate and only hurts for a little while.
