My friend's dad moved from Italy when he was 13, he stayed with some relatives, but pretty much had to support himself. He worked, didn't get to go to school. Now, he has 4 grown children (a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, and an engineer). He paid for schooling for all of them! He owns several restaurants, stripmalls, and rental properties.
Also, Oprah is a very well-known example, as is Dr. Phil. I'm sure you can find plenty of celebrity examples.

Colin Powell...(African) Came from absolutly nothing..Parents were immigrants from Jamaca...I believe his mom still lives there...
Went to a relativly no name college in New York Joined ROTC and just kept rising up through the ranks...
Howard Shwartz..(Jewish) (Might be wrong on the name) Owner of Starbucks...Born in the Bronx i believe..very poor family in a bad part of town....went to Northern Michigan University on a football scholarship (division III bad football) ...then moved to Seattle and had an idea about good coffee....

definitely. Oprah is a good example, but if you where to watch a show like maybe "Driven" on VH1 you can see so many more examples there, you'll find everything you need to know about how they started from scratch.
