I've got a sore throat and I know that milk and honey is good cos honey is antibacterial.

However, I want a more indulgent drink, can hot milk and golden syrup have the same effect? Or am I just drinking it cos it tastes so yummy?

You're right about the honey being good for the throat - I'm not sure about the syrup, however anything that encourages you to drink plenty when you have a sore throat has got to be good.

PS. I don't know if you're old enough to drink...but I love Baileys with ice when I have a sore throat, it is soooooo soothing.

The proven remedy is a hot lemon drink with honey. Milk encourages bacteria, so does sugar, which is exactly what Golden Syrup is. It has no beneficial qualities save to give you temporary energy.

I believe that it is actual the very high sugar content in golden syrup, honey, jam and marmalade etc that the bacteria don't like (which is why it takes a very long time for mould to grow on the surface and if you scrape it off, the rest is OK).

Nope in honey there are other properties that the bees put in there from their saliva. So nope a simple sugar suryp will not cure you. Stick to the honey! Raw honey. A teaspoon or two a few times a day undiluted will kill your throat ills!

You can still get golden syrup, and my supermarket has the golden syrup cake ( Yorkshire) but I must admit, I have not seen the biscuits for a while.

NO it has not !, honey has but pretty limited. You'll rot your teeth, get fat and send your blood sugar levels through the roof.

I don't know, but if it tastes nice it will help with the feel-good factor, so go ahead and indulge.
