I am not afraid of leprechans, or santa claus, or unicorns. They don't exist, so when I see one, I don't freak out. To take offense at something means there must be something there. You cannot be offended by "nothing".

Good point! Lately it seems like the atheists are asking the most questions about God! Maybe they secretly want to believe? Maybe they need to convince themselves that they don't believe by constantly putting down the idea? Maybe they're God-ophobic (like homophobic but not) tee hee...

Methinks they doth protest too much...

:)

I also find it curious when I catch an atheist saying "Oh my God" I guess he's theirs when it's convenient? Or is it just an expression? A slip of the tongue? Your point about Santa is a good one. If they really don't believe God exists, why is He such a threat? Why are they so angry & hateful about it?

I don't believe that atheists are afriaid of God/gods.

They are simply frustrated of the people who believe in them, not the actual beings themselves.

Wouldn't you be annoyed around people who are over-obsessive over religion? If someone went up to you and began arguing that Santa Claus exists, using flawed proof and logic throughout the entire argument, most likely you would begin to avoid said person. And, considering that such people would just end up going out of their way to pester you, I think it would get irritating pretty quickly.

As for taking offence from it, I think being told that science is completely wrong and that you are wrong about everything, despite the fact that you have proof for your argument while your opponent does not, ends up being offensive.

While you cannot be offended by "nothing," you CAN be offended by the people who believe in said "nothing" and feel the compelling need to pester you about changing your beliefs.

I've never met an atheist who was afraid of God. They simply want to be able to live their lives without having the idea of God forced upon them. The atheists who are always complaining about the 10 commandments or "In God We Trust" are just argumentative people looking for a debate with argumentative Christians. Most atheists don't think twice about either of those things, or anything else religiously related.

Most self proclaimed atheists, have a moral problem with God; one reason is because if there is a moral law giver then they will be required to give an account for their actions. There are however, a few atheists with intellectual hurdles, those are usually pretty easy to deal with, but the problem arises with the willingness of the atheist to accept the argument, even if it is valid and sound. That is why most atheists embrace evolution, because one can explain the universe without a supernatural element.

I think, the soft-hearted atheist, takes offense at God b/c of the problems and violences committed in the name of God throughout history. Perhaps the atheist is weary then of use of this word -God- which has caused and fueled much hatred and abuse. (I myself am not an atheist, but it is helpful to try to understand where people are coming from)

Who says atheists are afraid of God?

I think many are more worried about the irrational things that religious folk do in the name of God.

I think you're reading their response wrong. I think what you're witnessing is frustration and some mild irritation. There are lots of paths that bring an Athiest to an agnostic place. Most Athiests are irritated because they think the idea of God is rediculous and frustrated because they stongly beleive in their nonbelief.

Most atheists aren't offended by God, they just don't want to deal with the people who bring it up. I'm guessing on this because that's what my friends do.

Do you frequently see unicorns or leprechauns?
Perhaps atheists are being convicted of their need for a Savior.

They simply want everyone to believe as they do. They get their names in the paper and they feel great as someone recognizes them. Why should we change history for a few ignorant people. We grew up with the pledge of allegiance, if people don't like it take their kids and go to another country.
