This is a long answer but please do take the time to read it all.
Just as some people don't get on with other people and don't speak to each other this proves it has nothing to do with intelligence. It has to do with personality and character and some people click and some don't. Chemistry is an element that can create a bond with people without speaking. Eye contact can for some cement chemistry. People that are unfortunate to be dumb can't communicate properly with non dumb people but they could be more intelligent. Dolphins can't talk but that does not mean they are not intelligent. They are very intelligent. I am very fortunate to live in an area with a dolphin close by in the Ocean. It has been here over four years so I have had plenty of opportunities to make an opinion on dolphin intelligence. Although many people come to swim with the dolphin from all over Europe the dolphin like humans has its favourites and creates a special bond with them. For these people the dolphin has brought a salmon and presented it to its favourite people presenting it like a well trained gun dog holding game in its mouth for its owner to take it. The dolphin did exactly the same with the salmon but the only difference is that it took months to train the dog to do it but the dolphin had no training. It was giving a present to a very special person just like a guy that is deeply in love with his girlfriend gives her a special present. His gift has probably taken hours to select and visits to many shops. There are no shops in the Ocean for the dolphin to select a special present but the dolphin's present of a salmon shows that it selected something very special. Salmon is probably the most desired fish to a human. Note that the dolphin did not bring a herring, a mackeral, a cod or any other common fish. It went for delicacy and that to me shows intelligence and awareness.
I recall sitting beside the rocks at the edge of the Ocean watching the dolphin swimming and playing with about twenty people. It was playing with a ball and some of the swimmers placed a towel flatly spread on the water. The dolphin came from below the towel and pushed it into the air finally grasping it and giving it to a swimmer to repeat the process. In the midst of this playtime someone carried a young disabled boy who could not walk setting him down on the rocks along with about fifty other people watching and enjoying the spectable. I was sitting next to the boy who was about 10-12 years of age. I was amazed that the dolphin left all the swimmers about 50 -60 meters from shore and swam directly to the disabled boy at the edge of the rocks. The boy was able to stroke the boy and the dolphin turned its belly up to him a sure sign of affection and the boy with a bit of difficulty was able to rub its belly. The look on the little boy's face said it all. It certainly made his day and no doubt he would tell people for the rest of his life about his dolphin experience. The dolphin stayed with the boy for about 15 minutes. During that time the boy forgot about his disability. During that short time he was a normal person. The dophin also knew the boy was special because it picked him out of the crowd of people on the rocks and it left its "playing pals" and it certainly was enjoying the games. To me this shows more than intelligence it shows compassion and feeling something that many human beings are lacking. The swimmers did not come over to make a fuss of the disabled boy they probably did not even notice him but the dolphin noticed him and cared enough about him to go out of its way to give the boy a bit of pleasure that he will cherish for the rest of its life.
I could provide many more details of dolphin's intelligence from this dolphin whose surroundings is the wide Ocean expanse. It is a wild dolphin and by that I mean it was not reared in confinement and fed by humans.
Don't expect dolphins to tell you themselves that they are intelligent but if you study them over time you will appreciate their intelligence and many other talents they have that humans don't possess. If only humans could learn from dolphins the world would be a much better place. Humans can learn a lot from dolphins this suggests that in some areas of the brain dolphins are superior to humans. This does not say they are totally superior. There is a balance.

They can't speak english- only french. And due to the complications of underwater electronics combined with the lack of opposable digits which they might use to operate such underwater translating instruments, they simply can't tell you. But in a way you're right cos if they were that bloody smart they'd do night classes and learn english. The dicks.

Granted, they can't speak English, but then neither could the ancient Egyptians and they made the freaking Pyramids, which strikes me as pretty bloody smart :oD
When we deign to learn their language, they'll tell us plenty.

Because they don't have the vocal apparatus of a human. They can't make the same sounds in a language you'll understand. The clicks mean something, don't they? Ha :)
