Take off the tension....if its a bar use a pipe wrench to grab and act as a brake against the twist and say the ceiliing. It will take two pipe wrenches and you use one to back off the other until you unload the spring.
Its best to have two people on ladders doing this together.

If its just a spring opening the door and fully collapseing the spring should allow you to un spring the spring.

Torsion springs can be very dangerous. unless you know what you are doing get help. If there is a new subdivision around you, go there and ask one of the guys if they will help.

Prior to jamming a bar in there to release the pressure and security pin, check to be certain your insurance is paid and your next of kin is notified. With the pressure released from one of those springs you could be found in a different county. But what the heck, you'll save a few bucks.

I have tried to re-set it my self and nearly had my fingers chopped off. DO NOT DO IT. Tradesmen have special tools and they do it in minutes, quite safely.

Unfortunately they charge a lot because they know it is beyond you.

If you have to ask, you really shouldn't be doing this.

But a google on the subject brings up many pages. Here's one.
