I live with my boyfriend of 5 years and his mother, and the first year we were together his mom took us (me and his brother and brothers girlfriend) all to dinner for his birthday. I paid my own way, but no one else did. She didn't say anything but took it. Everyone else just looked at the money I gave her, and didn't offer. Over the last few years I've been just having friends over to the house for birthday parties. This year she wants to take my boyfriend/her son to dinner and she knows I'm coming as well. Cause we always are together..should I pay for myself? Or assume she is treating me as well? I feel like I should at least offer, it just seems awkward at times. I know she doesn't make much money, yet I don't want her to feel like I look at her like a charity case either.

you got right idea here and your hearts in right place . just pay your own way again unless she stops you and dont worry about others at tabel . if it feels right usually it is . dont assume because she let you do that but no one else that she thinks less of you . she thinks less of the others because they didnt offer and you did . use this thinking in the rest of your life problems and youll do fine . God bless the child whos got their own .

That's a tough one. Frankly you should all pay your own way except for the boyfried whose birthday it is. Sounds like the others in that party are moochers.

I think its very commendable of you to offer, shows what a kind and considerate person you are. Kudos to you.

PS don't worry about what everyone else does or thinks.

proper etiquette would be just to offer to pay, she probably wont let you, but it is always nice to offer.
