I have been researching to find the roots of Kshatriyas where I got confused and thats why I wanted to ask this question. Are Kshatriyas in India only in Forward class or even in Backward class. I see lot of subdivisions in Kshatriyas today Somavanshi, suryavanshi, chandravanshi etc. As far as I know there are only four gothras for Kshatriyas. Can someone tell me how these classifications came in? Under which category do Pandavs from mahabharath come in?

King manu in his smruti divided the society into 4 classes. Brahmana, Kshatriya , vaishya and shudra. This was done to apportion the work load of the society in an assembly line pattern. Brhmanas were those whos job was to learn the vedas, sastras, astrology, medicine, mantras and tantra and use them to guide and help people to lead a peaceful life. Kshatrias were given the rulership and administrative duties, including judicial and arbitration of disputes. They were given Military training and other knowledge of administration and It was their duty to lead the army in battle. Economics and trade were given to vaishyas and all other essential duties such as agriculture, cattle rearing, milk and milk products, leather tanning , meat products, construction work, and other related works were given to shudras. It worked in the assembly line fashion in Satya yuga , treta yuga and by the end of dwapara yuga it turned into rigid caste system. In kaliyuga the untouchability factor got in.(actually taht is the main work of Kali). Those Khsatriyas who ruled the world in satya yuga were surya vanshi like the Ikshvakus. Chandra vanshi ruled in dwapara yuga. (they are also called soma vanshi as Moon is also known as soma - which gives the name for somavar. Kauravas were from Kuru vansha which got destroyed totally in Maha bharata war. Lord krishna belonged to yaduvansha.

I do not know the names of the classes, but the system was supposedly abolished, like equality of the sexes in the US. The system started when a nation to the north colonized India. They gave certain ones authority over others. This social standing blended with the Hindu belief of reincarnation and karma.
