In the actual book My Friend Flicka, (there used to be these things called books) and in the Original movie (btw the kid with the horse in the original book and movie is a BOY) Gus, the Swedish ranchhand, names the untamable filly Flicka, which is Swedish for little girl.

um... if i rember correctly, her mom called her a flicka, and said it meant "pretty girl"
