It just seems like they would have to get the people to sign a contract that any stuff in the house/store is fair game. Because a lot of times John destroys gifts with sentimental value while ransacking the place. Also, do they wait some time after setting up cameras so the people are off their guard? Any other legal stuff I didn't think of?

I remembered something else: do they notify the police of when they're going to break in?

you know, that's probably the best question i've ever heard ( well, looked at, really ) i saw on one episode that this grandma never made extra copies of her grandson on her compuer ( u know, putting them on a disc and whatnot ) so they replaced her computer with another identical one, and when the thief came, they had him trip and make the computer break. but they suprised her with the other computer.

i'm sure they have to sign some sort of waver and maybe take things with sentimental value or something they really care about. You should write discovery channel asking that.

I've wondered about that myself--especially in episodes where they actually break in BEFORE asking permission. Something strange going on there. I do know that a lot of times they replace breakable stuff with replicas.

Did you see the one where Jon couldn't start the guy's car, so he tried to steal the neighbors' and it wouldn't start either? I still can't figure out why he didn't get in trouble for that one.

They probably pay the "victims" or it only looks like things are being destroyed - through the magic of television.....at least I would hope

I'm sure the people sign a consent form.......
I don't think they ever really distroy anything...
Not anything sentimental anyway...
