Great children authors abound today, which is a good thing. If your child enjoys fantasy, I might reccommend J.K. Rowling, Phillip Pullman, Lemony Snicket, or Alison Croggon. If your child is a bit older or enjoys science fiction, I would suggest Ray Bradbury or even H.G. Wells. Authors like Roald Dahl and Shel Silverstein are classic. Some good reads for kids:
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly
(Usually for boys) Lord of the Flies by William Gerald Golding
Nancy Drew Books by (pen name) Carolyn Keene
Similarly, but more for young boys, The Hardy Boys by Leslie McFarlane
As always, ask the children's librarian at your local public library for any ideas.

Do you mean an author who is a child or an author who writes for children?

In the former case, Christopher Paolini, author of "Eragon" and "Eldest," comes to mind. He wrote the first book when he was just fifteen, and it plays sophisticated games with genre types. Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, author of such novels as "Shattered Mirror" and "Demon in my View," also crops up. Her first novel, "In the Forests of the Night," appeared when she was thirteen and she's put out books pretty consistently since, most dealing with vampires, demons and other horror types.

Authors for children include Lloyd Alexander, Cornelia Funke, Michael deLarrabeiti, Diana Wynne Jones and, more recently, Francis Hardinge.

Sorry that paragraph's so short; I'm out of time!

Out of curiosity, what prompts the question?

Mark Twain is in my opinion the Author of Choice when it comes to books suitable for children. Once the child gets older, Robert A. Heinlein has written many excellent books aimed at children and youths to interest them in science and technology, but his stories always maintain a high ethical standard. Please expose your child to those two authors.
