Right wing governments are usually ultra conservative in social values, religious values, political values. Tend to be more militaristic, like juntas when there have been coup detats.
Think facism.

Left wing governments are more open, socialists are considered left wing. There are not as many conditions for doing things, take care of all the people , not just the rich and those who are nobless obliege. Governemnts in Sweden and Scandinavian countries are considered more left wing as they as a state take care of people cradle to grave.

Some considered the former Soviet governments a socialist paradise, but really it was far closer to conservatism and militarism than a socialist left wing government.

A right wing government believes in an authoritarian government, and that corporations and business are best left unfettered from laws. They believe in military action over diplomacy.

A liberal government believes in upholding the rights and welfare of the individual, and requiring businesses to be constrained by law in much the same way the public is. They prefer diplomacy and alliances over unilateral military action.

The Right Wing are people with morals and the guts to back up their beliefs. Right wing people generally serve a true purpose and make sure to follow through to the end ni an effort to make sure their task are accomplish.

The left wing goes with the flavor of the moment and often tends to jump from one cause to the other without finishing what they started. Bleeding heart liberals always try to go for the vote and support by appealing to the pity side of people. They are modern day Robin Hoods that want to rob from the working class and give to the poor and impoverished crack heads of America.

Here is some what of a diagram I've created to describe to the average person as to the setup of the supposed left and right wing political parties. The diagram, so to speak goes from one extreme to the other.
Leftest=Radical->Liberal->Democrat
-Independent-
Republican<-Conservative<-Reactionary=Right Wingers.
As the name states with republicans or "republic", means "rule of the majority" or the "poor" and "rule by a limited number of people" also known as the "rich". Ergo the Peoples Republic of China, which is a communist nation.
Democrats or "democracy" means "rule by the majority". Radicals (believe in rapid change) vs. liberals (who believe in measured , incremental change) vs. conservatives (who believe in minimal or cautious change), and sometimes vs. reactionaries (who believe in changing things to the way they were).
Many people will argue the fact that there party is right and the opposition is wrong. I am an independent because I will never dedicate my self to one ideal. Such as those made by BUSH "your with us or against us!" How can you dictate such crude words to your fellow countrymen? However, there are Democrats that will constantly switch sides on there beliefs and ideals. Being an Independent allows me to chose what I believe and/or want, not the party of whom I'm affiliated.

Not much! They both believe in forcing everybody else to do as they dictate. It is best not to think of the political spectrum as polar but Like two end of a ruler but as a circle with dictatorship at one point. then left and right just become ways to get to that point, which way around the circle you go.
